A Short Walk After Meals

Some habits are small enough that you can start them today. This is one of them: after you eat, take a short walk.

I’m John Panzeca, and I’m an Independent MarketPlace Global ISR. This page is about the habit itself. It’s just a simple routine that many people like.

Why a short walk after meals?

There is no trick to it. Walking needs no gym, no gear and no sign-up. A meal gives you a natural moment to build a habit around: when you finish eating, you get up and step outside.

It can be five or ten minutes. That’s the whole idea. A small habit, done the same way each day.

How to make it a habit

  • Tie it to the meal. Finish eating, clear the table, then walk. The meal becomes your reminder.

  • Start small. Five minutes is plenty to begin. You can add more later if you want to.

  • Pick one meal first. Dinner is a popular choice. Add others if it feels easy.

  • Keep your shoes by the door. One less thing to think about.

  • Choose an easy route. Around the block, down the driveway, or to the end of the street and back.

  • Go at your own pace. This is a stroll, not a workout.

  • Don’t worry about missing a day. Just pick it back up at the next meal.

Simple variations

  • Walk with a family member, a friend or a neighbor. It makes it easier to show up.

  • Take the dog along.

  • Make it a phone-call walk. Call someone you’ve been meaning to catch up with.

  • Listen to music, a podcast or an audiobook.

  • On a rainy day, walk the halls, the stairs or laps around the house.

  • At work, take a lap around the building after lunch.
